Objective
In India, some schools are different from regular schools.
They don’t just teach books— they teach discipline, confidence, fitness and
leadership. These schools are for children who dream of joining the Army, Navy
or Air Force. The most famous names are Sainik School, Military School and
Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC).
Many students and parents get confused because these schools
look similar from outside. But each one has its own purpose, its own training
style and a different level of preparation.
What is Sainik School?
A Sainik School is similar to a normal school in terms of
academics but life here is more disciplined and active. It is a fully
residential school so students live on campus. Their routine includes waking up
early, doing physical exercise, attending classes, playing sports and studying
in the evening. This structured schedule helps to build good habits in
children.
There are 33 Sainik Schools across India, in almost every
state. Admission is for Class 6 and Class 9 and students have to clear the
AISSEE entrance exam which includes subjects like English, Maths, Science and
Intelligence. After clearing that they have to clear a medical test.
Sainik Schools are for children who love sports and want to
experience a disciplined life with basic exposure to military culture—but in a
simple and fun way.
What is Military School?
Military Schools, officially known as Rashtriya Military
Schools, are more strict and disciplined than Sainik Schools. The training here
is tougher, the rules are tighter and the lifestyle is closer to real military
routine.
These schools emphasize on drills, parades, discipline,
responsibility and teamwork. Students live in hostels, follow a fixed schedule
and learn to respect discipline and physical fitness.
There are only 5 Military Schools in India, so admission is
highly competitive. Entry is for Class 6 and Class 9 and the entrance exam is
slightly tougher than Sainik School exam due to limited seats.
Military Schools are for children who want a more serious
military environment and are highly focused on joining the Defence forces.
What is RIMC?
RIMC (Rashtriya Indian Military College) is the most
prestigious and toughest among the three. It is a high-level institute to
prepare children to become future Defence officers. Many RIMC cadets get
selected for National Defence Academy (NDA) with ease.
There is only one RIMC campus in India, in Dehradun, so
admission is very tough. Students have to clear written exam, interview and
medical test to enter Class 8. Only the top performing students are selected.
Life at RIMC is highly disciplined and structured with
advanced academics, physical training, sports and leadership development. The
main focus is to prepare students to join Defence Forces as officers.
